Primary care plays a critical role in preventing and treating both acute and chronic conditions. Collaboration between public health and primary care is essential for a sustainable and efficient health system.

We will discuss the challenges of delivering primary care, our collaborative efforts as a team, and the support provided by organizational and educational leadership to address current health issues. These issues include the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, mental health crises, potential future outbreaks of infectious diseases, and the impending shortage of primary care providers.

SPECIAL SESSION: EMIGRATION OF MEDICAL DOCTORS FROM SOUTHEAST EUROPE - Thursday, 20 June 2024, 14:00

Special Session: Emigration of Medical Doctors from Southeast Europe

co-organized with Regional Cooperation Council (RCC)

BHAAAS International Symposium on Sustainable Urban Development 2024

Location:

Hotel Hills, ROOM 1

Date:

Thursday, 20 June 2024

Time:

14:00

DESCRIPTION

Panelists/Speakers: TBD – 8-9 Experts

Session Background:

The emigration of medical doctors from Southeast Europe presents a challenge to the sustainability of healthcare systems within the region. This phenomenon, often termed the “medical brain drain,” significantly impacts the quality and accessibility of healthcare services, and intersects with the objectives of the South East Europe 2030 Strategy (SEE2030) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), focusing on prosperity, people, and peace. This session aims to delve into the multifaceted aspects of this issue, examining the causes, effects, and potential strategies for mitigating the negative consequences of healthcare professional migration.

Economies in South East Europe, especially Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H), have been experiencing a notable exodus of healthcare professionals to more developed EU countries. Various factors, including better employment opportunities, higher salaries, and improved working conditions abroad, drive this migration. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the situation, highlighting the vulnerabilities of healthcare systems with insufficient medical staff.

Session Objectives:

– Assess the extent of medical doctor emigration from Southeast Europe and its impact on the healthcare systems of the origin economies.

– Explore the push and pull factors contributing to the emigration of medical doctors, including economic incentives, working conditions, and professional development opportunities.

– Evaluate existing and potential policy measures aimed at retaining medical doctors in Southeast Europe, such as improving working conditions, offering competitive salaries, and enhancing professional development pathways.

Why do some people vote for leftists, others for rightists… and still others do not go to the polls?

How to negotiate with a person whose political ideology differs from ours?

The way of thinking, the style of leadership or political activity largely depends on where the politician is positioned on the spiral of consciousness development. For example, the consciousness of traditionalists – depicted in the model of spiral dynamics as “blue consciousness” – is very different from the consciousness of “greens”.

The authors use this model to explain why people espouse different political ideologies, even when they are classmates.

This is an area that FBiH engineers will be familiar with and will be obliged to comply with, therefore it is important to familiarize them with the categorization of injuries (lighter and more severe), the procedure before the Ethics Committee as well as the disciplinary measures that may be imposed.

WORKSHOP "WRITING IN (AND ABOUT) TROUBLED TIMES" - Friday, 21 June 2024, 10:00 - 12:00

Location:

Faculty of Philosophy

Date:

Friday, 21 June 2024

Time:

10:00 – 12:00

DESCRIPTION

In the United States, students are taught forms and formulas for academic writing early on, usually from six grade through high school. As a result, when they get to university, their professors have to disabuse them of the notion that there is any “one size fits all” form of essay writing and instead begin to introduce them to the specific questions, concerns, and styles of different academic disciplines.

Thus, at university, students already trained to think about writing formally eventually learn that historians don’t write like literary critics, and that philosophers or political scientists don’t write like any of the others; moreover, they may learn that some disciplines, such as comparative literature or anthropology, borrow from many other fields, availing themselves of the tools of many different trades.

What is less rarely taught is the only thing that matters. As the linguist Bill Labov noted long ago, the one question every story must answer is “So what?” In this workshop, we’ll work on examples and exercises that emphasize how academic writing is no different in this respect: it too must engage with its audience and interlocutors, and it does so based on concerns and conversations that authors are already engaged in.

When it comes to writing in (and about) troubled times like ours, such concerns become even more important. In such times, rife with conflict, we need to write, not so much to say what we think, but instead to discover what we think.

Location:

Faculty of Philosophy

Friday, 21 June 2024

Time:

13:00 – 15:00

DESCRIPTION

Translation involves carrying words over from one language into another. Words come with all sorts of baggage: conceptual, literary, symbolic, political, historical, cultural, etc. Proverbially, some of it gets lost in translation. But as long as the meaning is conveyed across more or less unscathed, we consider the translation to be successful. In terms of translation, think of the world as one big busy and often poorly managed airport with words travelling back and forth with all their baggage, getting lost, being found, going off to explore the world and coming back home richer for the experience.

Thus conceived, translation is not a one-way journey with a beginning and an end. There is no stasis in the world of translation, everything is in constant flux. Words and their meanings, concepts and their implications, everything from whole works of literature and entire literary traditions down to the smallest quirks of local custom and poetic license keeps travelling back and forth and becoming transformed in the process. The result is all that we share.

The workshop will focus on moving cultural content between languages through translation and how this is complicated when such content is already familiar in the target language. Participants will be invited to work on sample passages and offer their own thoughts and insights. Specifically, we will look at Tabish Khair’s novel Just Another Jihadi Jane, translated into Bosnian as Čudna jada od džihada by Ulvija Tanović, and explore the challenges of translating fictional characters struggling to find their place in the world into a language where they already feel at home.

Join us for a thought-provoking roundtable discussion on the intricacies of cultural policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a country with a complicated political system, where jurisdictional issues often blur lines and hinder progress, understanding the importance of investing in culture is paramount.

Despite the rich cultural heritage and potential for economic and social growth, there remains a lack of widespread appreciation for the value of cultural investment. This discussion will delve into the challenges posed by the current landscape, exploring how inadequate investment stifles both financial and non-financial returns for the society.

A key focus of our conversation will be the unresolved status of important cultural institutions. With unclear jurisdictional boundaries, these institutions face uncertainty and instability, impacting their ability to fulfill their vital roles within the cultural landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Through candid dialogue and exchange of ideas, we aim to shed light on these pressing issues and explore potential pathways towards effective cultural policy reform. Join us as we navigate the complexities and advocate for a more vibrant and resilient cultural sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Exhibition guided tour: “Unfolding Elsewheres” by Velibor Božović

DESCRIPTION

Curator: Claudia Zini

An exhibition in collaboration with Steve Bates and Zeenat Nagree
June 2nd – 25th 2023

The exhibition Unfolding Elsewheres displays some of the most representative works by artist Velibor Božović. It contains his earlier autobiographical video work My Prisoner (2016), a memory project titled Unfolding Elsewheres (2016-2023) and his latest sound work titled Listening series (2023). A new radio project Radio Elsewheres, produced by the artist in collaboration with writer Zeenat Nagree and artist and musician Steve Bates, will launch and operate from within the exhibition space.

The memory project Unfolding Elsewheres is composed of a series of photographic prints of firsthand accounts of people’s lives before, during and after the war in the 1990s, collected by Božović and writer Aleksandar Hemon while interviewing members of the Bosnian diaspora. The artist later transcribed and reassembled these conversations by purposely eliminating their syntactic elements, resulting in fragmented texts that open a space for a viewer to explore points of familiarity and strangeness.

The exhibition also features the Listening series, a composition of various audio recordings that echo a fluid assembly of voices telling of lives in transition. The work was born in close correlation to Radio Elsewheres, a program conceptualized specifically for the exhibition that aims to become a space for reflection and dialogue open to artists, musicians, journalists, writers, poets, storytellers and others interested in sharing their projects and experiences around conflict, movement, and migration. Those interested in contributing to Radio Elsewheres, please check the open call at the link: https://www.radioelsewheres.net/.
